Etta James was twenty-two years old when she entered the Chess Records world and recorded a romantic ballad that sounded almost impossibly mature for someone so young.

The recording was an unusual choice for a singer who had come from harder R&B.

When released, At Last was not the enormous pop hit its later reputation might suggest.

Within the following years, James became trapped in heroin addiction.

Drug use, legal problems and turbulent relationships repeatedly interrupted a career built around one of the most powerful voices in American music.

She later spent years fighting addiction before finally achieving long-term sobriety.

That history does not make the recording false.

It makes it more complicated.

When James sings that the lonely days are over, she is not predicting her own future.

She is entering the emotional world of the song completely.

That may explain why At Last survived long after many larger chart hits disappeared.

People hear certainty in it.

Chess Records now describes the performance as the enduring standard of her early career. It was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and selected for the National Recording Registry.
