Bill Medley Lost His Partner, Then “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” Gave Him a Career-Defining Comeback

A voice that had already made history

By the 1980s, Bill Medley was already a veteran of American soul music.

As one half of the Righteous Brothers, Medley had helped create some of the most emotional recordings of the 1960s, including “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.”

But decades later, another song would introduce his powerful voice to an entirely new generation.

Then came Dirty Dancing

In 1987, Medley was approached about recording a song for the soundtrack of a new movie called Dirty Dancing.

The song was “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” written by Franke Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz.

Medley initially wasn't convinced.

He was hesitant about recording a song for a movie, and there was another complication: the producers wanted him to record it with Jennifer Warnes.

But the pairing worked.

One performance changed everything

The song became the centerpiece of the movie's unforgettable final dance sequence between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.
