He Chose Songs Almost Nobody in the Room Knew, and Asked for Lilies and Candles
MTV had a format and Nirvana broke most of it.
The show existed to have big rock bands play their hits acoustically. The producers had a reasonable expectation of what a Nirvana episode would be, which was the songs everybody knew, softened.
Kurt Cobain had other ideas and would not be moved on any of them.
He refused to build the set around the hits. Of the fourteen songs performed on 18 November 1993, six were covers, including three by the Meat Puppets, a band whose members he brought on stage to play with him and whose songs the studio audience largely did not recognise.
He asked for the stage to be decorated with stargazer lilies, black candles and a chandelier. A producer reportedly asked whether he meant something like a funeral, and Cobain said exactly.
He was ill, in withdrawal, and extremely nervous. There are accounts of the rehearsals going badly and of MTV staff becoming anxious about whether the taping would happen at all.
He also refused to do the usual thing of playing songs multiple times for editing. Almost the entire show is a single continuous performance.
He kept his cardigan on and sat down.
The last song was a very old blues, a version of a Lead Belly piece that Cobain had loved for years. Before playing it he told the room that he could not do it twice, and by all accounts he meant it literally.
The final verse is not sung so much as torn. There is a note near the end where his voice gives out entirely and he lets it, and then a long silence before the room reacts.
Five months later he was dead.
The recording was released that November and went to number one. It is now the way a great many people first encounter him, and it is nothing like the band he actually led.
He had wanted to show that the songs worked without the volume, and that his taste ran deeper than anyone gave him credit for.
He proved both, on a stage he had asked to have decorated like a wake.
One Voice Had Defined This Heartbreak. A Duet Opened It Up Again
Few singers were as closely identified with a single emotional journey as Roy Orbison was with “Crying.” By 1987, the ballad’s rise from quiet composure to open anguish had been part of his legacy for more than a quarter-century. Recording it again could easily have felt unnecessary. Sharing it with k.d. lang made the return worthwhile.
The new version, recorded for the soundtrack to the film Hiding Out, did not treat lang as a decorative guest or ask her to copy Orbison’s famous performance. Instead, the two singers approached the song as equals. The result was less a remake than a conversation between distinct voices, each bringing a different weight to the same confession.
A Song Built to Lose Control
Orbison wrote “Crying” with Joe Melson and first released it in 1961. Like many of Orbison’s best recordings, it overturned the usual expectations of an early rock-and-roll single. It moved patiently, allowing embarrassment, longing and emotional restraint to accumulate before the voice finally broke free.
That structure was inseparable from Orbison’s appeal. He did not merely sing about vulnerability; he dramatized the effort to conceal it. His smooth, almost formal delivery made the eventual surge feel larger because it came from someone who had tried so hard to remain composed.
The original became a major hit and one of the defining performances of Orbison’s career. That created a challenge for any later interpretation, including his own: How do you revisit a recording whose shape already seems complete?
The duet answered by changing the human dynamic. Lang’s voice could carry a low, controlled ache, then expand with remarkable force. Orbison still supplied the high, operatic intensity listeners expected, but the arrangement did not position her beneath him. Their lines and harmonies made the sorrow feel shared, as though two people were examining the same emotional wound from different sides.
Two Generations Meet Inside the Song
The pairing also joined artists at different stages. Orbison was an established figure whose influence extended well beyond the first era of rock. Lang was an emerging Canadian performer with deep country roots and an unconventional presence that resisted easy categorization.
Those differences can be heard without becoming a competition. Lang does not attempt an Orbison impression, and Orbison does not soften his identity to meet hers. His voice carries the history of the song; hers makes room for a listener encountering it in the late 1980s. When they come together, the performance gains tension from contrast rather than vocal showmanship for its own sake.
The collaboration earned the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 1988. It also arrived near the beginning of Orbison’s remarkable late-career resurgence, when renewed attention was bringing his work to audiences who had not experienced his early-1960s peak firsthand.
Yet the duet’s lasting value is not simply that it updated an old hit. It revealed something already present in “Crying”: heartbreak does not belong to one age, one style or even one voice. Orbison had originally made private sorrow sound monumental. With lang beside him, he showed that the same sorrow could also become an exchange—two singers listening, answering and finally rising together.

Roy Orbison was enjoying a remarkable return when time abruptly ran out. At 52, he had joined the Traveling Wilburys, reintroduced his dramatic voice to younger listeners and completed a new solo album. Its most immediate song, "You Got It," sounded less like a farewell than a confident new beginning.
Co-written by Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, the song joined three distinctive musical sensibilities. Orbison brought the romantic scale: the feeling that a simple promise could carry the emotional weight of an opera. Petty contributed an instinct for direct, economical rock songwriting. Lynne, who produced the recording, supplied the polished layers and bright rhythmic clarity that defined much of his late-1980s work.
A Voice That Needed No Reinvention
The collaboration worked because nobody tried to disguise Orbison or turn him into a fashionable pop singer. Instead, the production created a contemporary frame around the qualities that had always made him singular.
The arrangement moves with crisp, unhurried confidence. Acoustic guitars establish a steady pulse, electric guitar adds color without crowding the melody, and the backing vocals give the chorus a warm, communal lift. Lynne's production is clean and carefully stacked, but Orbison remains at the center. His voice begins with conversational restraint, then expands until the song's promise feels almost limitless.
That balance was crucial. Orbison's classic recordings often built toward extraordinary peaks, with melodies that seemed to rise beyond the normal boundaries of pop. "You Got It" preserves that grandeur in a compact structure suited to late-'80s radio. The sound was current, but the emotional logic was unmistakably his.
The recording also emerged from a trusted musical circle. Work on the track included members of the community surrounding Petty and the Traveling Wilburys, and the basic recording took place at guitarist Mike Campbell's garage studio in Los Angeles. The relaxed setting did not produce a casual result. Every element serves the song's central idea: complete devotion expressed without hesitation.
A Comeback Heard as a Goodbye
Orbison performed "You Got It" publicly at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium, on November 19, 1988. It would be his only public performance of the song. Footage from that appearance later became central to its music video, giving audiences an image of Orbison delivering his new single with characteristic stillness and control.
Less than three weeks later, on December 6, Orbison died suddenly of a heart attack. "You Got It" was released posthumously in early 1989, followed by the album Mystery Girl. The single reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving him his first American Top 10 hit since "Oh, Pretty Woman" in 1964. It also climbed to No. 3 in the United Kingdom.
Those numbers confirmed the scale of Orbison's comeback, but they also sharpened the sadness around it. He had not merely revisited an old sound; he had found collaborators who understood how to carry it forward.
The Promise Inside the Performance
What keeps "You Got It" from feeling trapped in its circumstances is Orbison's refusal to sing it mournfully. His performance is generous, steady and openhearted. Knowing what followed may change how listeners hear the record, but the recording itself looks ahead.

A B-Side Session Became a Supergroup When One Voice Took Flight
In 1988, George Harrison faced a modest assignment: deliver a B-side for "This Is Love," a single from his album Cloud Nine. What emerged from a casual gathering at Bob Dylan's home studio in Malibu was "Handle with Care," the first recording by the Traveling Wilburys. The song had charm from the start, but its emotional center arrived when Roy Orbison lifted the friendly collaboration into another realm.
The session came together through a remarkable chain of invitations. Harrison was already working with Jeff Lynne, who had produced Cloud Nine, and the pair brought in Orbison, Dylan and Tom Petty. All five helped write the song, building it quickly around a phrase Harrison noticed on a box in Dylan's garage. Its origin was almost comically ordinary, especially considering what followed.
The Voice That Changed the Stakes
"Handle with Care" moves with an easy, front-porch informality. Acoustic guitars keep the rhythm light, Harrison's slide guitar curls around the melody, and the singers pass lines and harmonies among themselves. The performance sounds relaxed because these famous musicians were not yet burdened by the expectations that come with launching a supergroup. They were completing a B-side.
Then Orbison enters.

Too Good to Set Aside
When executives at Harrison's record company heard "Handle with Care," they considered it too strong to disappear on the back of a single. That judgment encouraged Harrison and his collaborators to expand the experiment. The Traveling Wilburys took shape, and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 arrived later in 1988, presenting five major artists under playful fictional identities rather than their famous names.
Orbison died that December, only weeks after the album's release. His death inevitably gave his contribution added poignancy, but hearing it only as a farewell misses the session's spirit. He sounds present, energized and delighted by the company around him.
A song intended to fill spare space became the reason a band existed.
