Bill Withers was thirty two before anyone recorded a note he had written.

He had done nine years in the Navy, then moved to Los Angeles and taken a factory job fitting toilet seats into aircraft. He bought a cheap guitar from a pawn shop and taught himself, badly, on the assumption that nothing would come of it.

He was still on that production line when the record came out.
