He Refused to Play It in Belfast Until He Asked the Crowd for Permission

The Edge wrote most of it alone, in a bad week.

It was 1982, he had just moved to a cottage in Ireland, his relationship was in trouble and the band's future was uncertain. Bono had told him to write something with anger in it. What came out was a guitar figure and a set of lyrics about a specific day.

On 30 January 1972, in Derry, British soldiers shot twenty six unarmed civil rights demonstrators. Thirteen died that day.
