On May 4, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd during a campus demonstration against the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Casting a contemporary recording star gave the revival familiarity, while the expanded stage version attempted to make a cherished movie work as a living theatrical event rather than a museum piece.
The show did not survive, but “Wonderful, Wonderful Day” preserves the emotional logic behind the effort.
