Madonna Shocked the World With “Like a Prayer” — Then Pepsi Paid the Price for a Song That Became a Classic

The song that turned into a cultural storm

In 1989, Madonna was already one of the biggest stars in the world. But when she released “Like a Prayer,” she pushed her music and imagery into territory that few pop stars had attempted before.

The single was released on March 21, 1989, as the lead track from her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer. It quickly became a massive international hit, reaching No. 1 in both the United States and United Kingdom.

Then came the video

The controversy wasn't simply about the song.

Directed by Mary Lambert, the music video combined religious imagery with a story involving racism, violence, forbidden love and burning crosses. Madonna had deliberately wanted the visual to confront themes of racism and bigotry.
