Stevie Nicks Almost Didn’t Want This Duet—Then “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” Helped Launch Her Solo Career
A collaboration that almost never happened
When Stevie Nicks began working on her first solo album in 1981, she already knew exactly the sound she wanted. After years with Fleetwood Mac, she wanted her solo record to have some of the raw rock energy she admired in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Producer Jimmy Iovine became the key connection between the two worlds.
Nicks had actually been asking Petty for a song for years. Petty initially wrote “Insider” for her, but after recording it, he decided he liked the song too much to give it away and kept it for his own album, Hard Promises.
The song Petty gave her instead
Petty and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell had written “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” as a Heartbreakers song. Iovine saw something different in it: he suggested turning it into a duet with Nicks.
The arrangement created a fascinating contrast. Nicks' distinctive voice carries the emotional center of the song, while Petty's rougher vocal adds another perspective, making the relationship in the lyrics feel like a conversation between two people who know the relationship is falling apart.
Stevie wasn't initially thrilled
Perhaps the most surprising part of the story is that Nicks didn't immediately embrace the idea.
According to Rhino's account of the recording, Nicks was protective of her first solo album and initially objected to the idea of putting a duet on it. She reportedly stormed out of the studio before reconsidering and returning.
That decision proved enormously important.
Released in 1981 as the first single from Bella Donna, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains Nicks' highest-charting American single.
The song changed the beginning of her solo career
Bella Donna became a major success, reaching No. 1 and eventually receiving a 5× Platinum certification for five million units shipped in the United States. The album established Nicks as a successful solo artist while she was still a member of Fleetwood Mac.
And Nicks later credited the song with helping make her solo career possible.
What began as a song from Tom Petty's repertoire became something much bigger: the first major musical statement of Stevie Nicks outside Fleetwood Mac.

Four Dead Students, One Magazine, and a Song That Could Not Wait
The photographs did not allow Neil Young the comfort of distance. In May 1970, Life magazine brought the violence at Kent State University into American homes, including John Filo's harrowing image of 14-year-old Mary Ann Vecchio kneeling beside the body of student Jeffrey Miller. Young saw those pictures and responded with "Ohio," a song written not as historical reflection, but as an alarm sounded while the crisis was still unfolding.
On May 4, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd during a campus demonstration against the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder were killed; nine other people were wounded. Some of the victims had been protesting, while others were passing nearby. The photographs made the event impossible to reduce to an abstract argument about war or campus unrest.
From the Page to the Guitar
David Crosby later recalled giving Young the magazine and watching the images hit him hard. Young withdrew with his guitar and returned with a song. Whatever private process took place in those minutes, the finished work carried the speed of first response: blunt language, a narrow harmonic frame, and a central question that refused to offer comfort.
That immediacy distinguishes "Ohio" from songs written after public wounds have become history. Young did not build an elaborate narrative or explain the politics in detail. He compressed the shock into repeated phrases, accusatory images, and the grim counting of four deaths. His guitar sounds raw and unsettled, more like an exposed nerve than a polished statement.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young recorded the song on May 21, 1970, little more than two weeks after the shootings. Young and Stephen Stills supplied the electric-guitar tension, while bassist Calvin Samuels and drummer Johnny Barbata gave the track its heavy, marching momentum. The group's harmonies, normally associated with careful blend and control, feel strained by grief. Near the end, Crosby's anguished vocal cries push the performance beyond formal protest and toward something almost unbearable.
A Release That Could Not Follow the Schedule
CSNY already had music in the marketplace, including "Teach Your Children," when the group decided "Ohio" had to come out immediately. Rather than save it for a future album campaign, they pressed for a rush release. Atlantic issued it as a single in June 1970, backed with Stills' "Find the Cost of Freedom."
That decision mattered. Popular records usually moved through long cycles of planning, manufacturing, promotion, and radio programming. "Ohio" entered circulation while Kent State remained a living national argument. Its direct reference to President Richard Nixon made the single politically confrontational, but listeners did not need to share every conclusion to recognize its urgency. The record reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.
More than half a century later, "Ohio" still sounds unusually close to the event that created it. There is little sense of hindsight and no attempt to smooth the edges. Young saw photographs of young Americans lying on a college campus, wrote before the shock could settle, and recorded before outrage could become ceremony. Listen again, and the most striking quality is not polish but pressure: four musicians treating delay itself as a failure to respond.
Why a Folk-Rock Star Hid His Voice Inside a Machine
Neil Young's robotic voice on "Transformer Man" was not an attempt to erase emotion. It helped him confront how difficult communication could be within his own family.
Released on the 1982 album Trans, the song grew from Young's experiences with his son Ben, who was born in 1978 with cerebral palsy. Ben had limited voluntary movement and could not speak, leaving his parents to search for ways to understand his needs and help him interact with the world.
Young and Ben's mother, Pegi, devoted themselves to demanding therapy and communication efforts. That experience reshaped Young's thinking about language: A person could have a rich inner life yet remain unable to make others hear it. Technology might offer a bridge, but it could also underline the distance that remained.
Making the Barrier Audible
By the early 1980s, Young had already built a career on abrupt changes of direction, moving among acoustic country, hard rock and more reflective singer-songwriter records. Trans, however, sounded like a particularly sharp break. Synthesizers, electronic rhythms and heavily processed vocals replaced much of the ragged warmth associated with his best-known work.
On several tracks, Young sang through a vocoder, a device that reshaped his voice into synthesized tones. The effect could make words difficult to decipher. Young later explained that the album's preoccupation with machines and distorted speech was connected to his attempts to communicate with Ben. The obscured vocals were not simply a futuristic costume; they represented people reaching toward one another through an imperfect system.
"Transformer Man" is the album's most tender expression of that idea. Its melody is gentle and reassuring even as the vocal treatment creates separation between the singer and listener. The music suggests both wonder and frustration: Technology expands what may be possible, yet the human voice still seems trapped inside it.
The song's language of controls, signals and transformation also takes on a personal dimension in that context. Rather than presenting Ben only through his disability, Young imagined ability, agency and potential. The child at the center of the song is not passive. He is someone learning to direct his surroundings and reveal himself to those who love him.
Hearing the Person Inside the Sound
When Trans arrived, its electronic production puzzled many listeners who expected another familiar Neil Young record. Its combination of conventional rock songs and computerized experiments could feel fragmented, while the vocoder made the album's emotional core easy to miss. What sounded cold on first contact was rooted in an intensely personal concern.
Young made that tenderness easier to recognize when he revisited "Transformer Man" acoustically for his 1993 MTV Unplugged performance. Without the electronic mask, the song sounded almost like a lullaby. The later arrangement did not invalidate the original; it clarified what had always been inside it.
Seen through Ben's story, the processed voice on Trans becomes less a barrier than a portrait of one. "Transformer Man" asks the listener to hear beyond an unfamiliar surface and recognize the person trying to connect. That tension between machinery and affection remains the song's most moving quality—and the best reason to hear Young's strange electronic turn with fresh ears.
A Career-Spanning Documentary Made a Rock Survivor Ask Whether She Should Keep Going
Looking backward can be dangerous for an artist who has built a career by charging ahead. As Joan Jett approached 60 in 2018, a documentary about her life forced her to consider more than old triumphs and familiar battles. It raised a harder question: After decades in rock and roll, did she still have a reason to continue?
Her answer became "Fresh Start," a new Joan Jett and the Blackhearts song made for the 2018 documentary "Bad Reputation." Heard over the film's closing credits, the track does not function as a nostalgic victory lap. Instead, it turns the act of reviewing a career into a serious examination of what should come next.
Directed by Kevin Kerslake, "Bad Reputation" follows Jett from her teenage years in the Runaways through the rejection she faced as a solo artist and the success she eventually found with the Blackhearts. It presents a musician who survived by refusing other people's ideas about what women should play, wear, say, or want. Yet endurance creates questions of its own. Continuing simply because she had always continued would not be enough.
Choosing Rock Again
In interviews surrounding the documentary, Jett explained that "Fresh Start" grew from thinking about whether she still enjoyed the work and still had something meaningful to say. Rock musicians do not have an official retirement age, but that freedom can make the decision more complicated. There is no whistle ending the game, only the private test of whether the fire remains.
That tension gives the song its weight. "Fresh Start" is not a farewell, and it does not treat aging as a defeat. It is about making a conscious choice rather than moving forward on habit. For Jett, whose public image has long suggested certainty and toughness, acknowledging that uncertainty was revealing. The song allowed her to question her purpose without surrendering it.
Musically, the recording stays close to the direct language Jett has trusted throughout her career. The rhythm is firm, the guitars arrive with familiar grit, and the chorus is built for immediate impact. There is no attempt to disguise the subject beneath elaborate production. The Blackhearts' compact attack keeps the reflection from becoming sentimental; even when the song looks inward, it moves with purpose.

The title might suggest reinvention, but Jett was not trying to erase her past. "Bad Reputation" makes clear how much that past cost her and how fiercely she protected her identity. A fresh start, in this context, means renewing the commitment rather than pretending the struggle never happened.
That distinction is central to Jett's story. She had already survived the Runaways' breakup, record-label rejection, shifting trends, and decades of assumptions about who belonged in hard rock. By 2018, the question was no longer whether outsiders would permit her to continue. It was whether she would choose it for herself.
"Fresh Start" leaves that choice sounding active rather than settled. Its rough-edged guitars and forward motion suggest an artist testing her resolve in real time. Listen again, and the song feels less like a declaration of endless youth than something more honest: a veteran rocker deciding that purpose, not age, should determine when the music stops.
A Hopeful Broadway Debut in a Musical Gone After Five Performances
Broadway debuts are supposed to open doors. Debby Boone’s arrived in a show whose door closed almost immediately. In 1982, the singer stepped into the leading role of Milly in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, performing “Wonderful, Wonderful Day” at the center of an ambitious musical that lasted only five regular Broadway performances.
The contrast remains striking. Boone was already famous for her 1977 recording of “You Light Up My Life,” a pop phenomenon that established her clear, polished voice with a vast audience. Broadway, however, required something different: sustaining a character through comedy, romance, conflict, and dance-driven spectacle eight times a week. Milly offered Boone the chance to show that she was more than the voice behind one enormous hit.
A joyful song with a dramatic purpose
“Wonderful, Wonderful Day,” written by composer Gene de Paul and lyricist Johnny Mercer, came from MGM’s 1954 film version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. In the stage musical, its buoyant melody serves an important purpose. Milly is embracing the promise of married life before she fully understands the household—and the seven unruly backwoods brothers—she has joined.
That gives the number more than surface sweetness. Its rising phrases and open-hearted romantic mood capture Milly’s optimism, but the audience can also sense how quickly that optimism will be tested. Boone’s bright vocal character was naturally suited to the song, yet Milly could not be played as merely cheerful. She is the person who brings order, empathy, and basic social education to a rough male world.
For Boone, the role turned the qualities listeners associated with her pop career—clarity, sincerity, and warmth—into theatrical tools. Milly’s kindness needs backbone, especially in a story whose courtship plot can feel troubling to modern audiences. The character’s authority helps keep the musical grounded when its frontier fantasy becomes most unruly.
Moving an MGM spectacle to Broadway
The production faced a daunting challenge before it reached New York. The 1954 movie was celebrated not only for its songs but for Michael Kidd’s famously athletic choreography, filmed with the scale and freedom of Hollywood. Recreating that excitement within a Broadway theater meant competing with vivid memories of barn-raising dances, mountain scenery, and a cast built for widescreen movement.
The stage adaptation retained the de Paul-Mercer songs and included new material by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, with a book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay. After 15 previews, it opened at the Alvin Theatre on July 8, 1982. It closed on July 11, after five performances.
Such a short run can flatten a production’s history into a single brutal statistic. Yet Boone’s Milly reveals what the gamble was trying to achieve. Casting a contemporary recording star gave the revival familiarity, while the expanded stage version attempted to make a cherished movie work as a living theatrical event rather than a museum piece.
The show did not survive, but “Wonderful, Wonderful Day” preserves the emotional logic behind the effort. It asks the performer to believe completely in a promising future, even while complications wait just beyond the final note. Boone was doing much the same on Broadway: beginning a new chapter in a production already running out of time. That tension gives her Milly lasting interest—a hopeful performance inside a musical with almost no tomorrow.
