A collaboration that almost never happened

When Stevie Nicks began working on her first solo album in 1981, she already knew exactly the sound she wanted. After years with Fleetwood Mac, she wanted her solo record to have some of the raw rock energy she admired in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Producer Jimmy Iovine became the key connection between the two worlds.

Nicks had actually been asking Petty for a song for years. Petty initially wrote “Insider” for her, but after recording it, he decided he liked the song too much to give it away and kept it for his own album, Hard Promises.
