On May 4, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd during a campus demonstration against the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder were killed; nine other people were wounded. Some of the victims had been protesting, while others were passing nearby. The 1954 movie was celebrated not only for its songs but for Michael Kidd’s famously athletic choreography, filmed with the scale and freedom of Hollywood. Casting a contemporary recording star gave the revival familiarity, while the expanded stage version attempted to make a cherished movie work as a living theatrical event rather than a museum piece.
The show did not survive, but “Wonderful, Wonderful Day” preserves the emotional logic behind the effort.
