Motown in 1970 was the most successful record operation in America, and it ran on a formula that Berry Gordy had refined until it was close to industrial.

Songs were about love. Records were three minutes long. Artists sang what they were given and stayed out of politics, because politics did not sell to a crossover audience and Gordy had built the entire company on crossing over.

Marvin Gaye was the label's biggest male star and had followed that formula for a decade.
