The Cure had spent the early eighties going somewhere very dark.
The album they made in 1982 is still cited as one of the bleakest records a major label has ever released. The sessions were fuelled by drugs and hostility, the band nearly broke up, and Robert Smith has said he was in genuinely poor shape by the end of it.
He was twenty three.
What he did next surprised everyone, including himself. He decided that he had gone as far in that direction as it was useful to go, and that the correct response was to make pop singles.
Not ironic pop singles. Actual ones.
The song arrived in 1992 on an album that was otherwise fairly heavy. It is a straightforward description of a good day. Nothing happens in it beyond someone waking up and feeling, unexpectedly, fine. There is a jangling guitar figure, a bounce, and a vocal that sounds like relief.
Smith has said it came out of a specific period when he had stopped drinking and things were unusually stable, and that he wrote it almost as a note to himself.
Not everyone in the band was delighted. There was resistance to releasing it as a single at all, on the grounds that it did not represent what the group was, and Smith himself has expressed ambivalence about it many times since.
It became by some distance their biggest hit, reaching number two in America and charting almost everywhere.
The strange consequence is that a band with an enormous catalogue of intricate, difficult, beautiful music is known by millions of people for one cheerful three minute song about a day off.
Smith has been asked about this endlessly and his answer has softened over the years. He has pointed out, reasonably, that a person who writes about despair for a decade has earned the right to write about a good Friday when one turns up.
The people who only know that one song are not wrong about him. They have just met him on the single day he was happy enough to write it down.
One Voice Had Defined This Heartbreak. A Duet Opened It Up Again
Few singers were as closely identified with a single emotional journey as Roy Orbison was with “Crying.” By 1987, the ballad’s rise from quiet composure to open anguish had been part of his legacy for more than a quarter-century. Recording it again could easily have felt unnecessary. Sharing it with k.d. lang made the return worthwhile.
The new version, recorded for the soundtrack to the film Hiding Out, did not treat lang as a decorative guest or ask her to copy Orbison’s famous performance. Instead, the two singers approached the song as equals. The result was less a remake than a conversation between distinct voices, each bringing a different weight to the same confession.
A Song Built to Lose Control
Orbison wrote “Crying” with Joe Melson and first released it in 1961. Like many of Orbison’s best recordings, it overturned the usual expectations of an early rock-and-roll single. Co-written by Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, the song joined three distinctive musical sensibilities. Orbison performed "You Got It" publicly at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium, on November 19, 1988. It would be his only public performance of the song. Footage from that appearance later became central to its music video, giving audiences an image of Orbison delivering his new single with characteristic stillness and control.
Less than three weeks later, on December 6, Orbison died suddenly of a heart attack. "You Got It" was released posthumously in early 1989, followed by the album Mystery Girl. The single reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving him his first American Top 10 hit since "Oh, Pretty Woman" in 1964. It also climbed to No. 3 in the United Kingdom.
Those numbers confirmed the scale of Orbison's comeback, but they also sharpened the sadness around it. He had not merely revisited an old sound; he had found collaborators who understood how to carry it forward.
The Promise Inside the Performance
What keeps "You Got It" from feeling trapped in its circumstances is Orbison's refusal to sing it mournfully. His performance is generous, steady and openhearted. Knowing what followed may change how listeners hear the record, but the recording itself looks ahead.

What emerged from a casual gathering at Bob Dylan's home studio in Malibu was "Handle with Care," the first recording by the Traveling Wilburys. The song had charm from the start, but its emotional center arrived when Roy Orbison lifted the friendly collaboration into another realm.
The session came together through a remarkable chain of invitations. Harrison was already working with Jeff Lynne, who had produced Cloud Nine, and the pair brought in Orbison, Dylan and Tom Petty. All five helped write the song, building it quickly around a phrase Harrison noticed on a box in Dylan's garage. Its origin was almost comically ordinary, especially considering what followed.
The Voice That Changed the Stakes
"Handle with Care" moves with an easy, front-porch informality. Acoustic guitars keep the rhythm light, Harrison's slide guitar curls around the melody, and the singers pass lines and harmonies among themselves. The Traveling Wilburys took shape, and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 arrived later in 1988, presenting five major artists under playful fictional identities rather than their famous names.
Orbison died that December, only weeks after the album's release. His death inevitably gave his contribution added poignancy, but hearing it only as a farewell misses the session's spirit. He sounds present, energized and delighted by the company around him.
A song intended to fill spare space became the reason a band existed.
