The Six Weeks That Captured Britain’s New Generation

In 1961, Britain was beginning to look different.

A new generation was growing up with its own music, its own style and a growing appetite for entertainment made especially for them. Into that moment stepped Cliff Richard, already one of Britain's biggest young stars.

But this time, he was not simply making another record.

He was stepping onto the big screen.

The result was a musical film built around the excitement of Britain's youth. The production brought together Cliff Richard and The Shadows, with the story presenting a world of young people, music and dreams while placing Richard at the center of it.

The title song was recorded during the film's production in London. Sessions for the project began in May 1961 at EMI Studios, with producer Norrie Paramor overseeing the recordings. The title track itself was recorded in August and December 1961.

At the time, nobody could know exactly how strongly the song would connect with the public.

Then the film arrived.

The single was released in January 1962, and almost immediately the response was enormous. It entered the UK chart at No. 1 and remained there for six weeks. Official Charts records 21 weeks on the chart overall.

The soundtrack was just as powerful.

The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and stayed there for six weeks, spending 42 weeks in the chart. It became the first British soundtrack to sell more than one million copies when UK and international sales were combined.

Suddenly, this was bigger than a successful film.
