The Song Bruce Springsteen Abandoned Became Patti Smith’s Biggest Breakthrough

THE SONG THAT WAS ALMOST LEFT BEHIND

In 1977, Bruce Springsteen was working on his next album when one particular recording refused to come together.

He already had the music. He had the chorus. But the verses weren't finished, and he eventually decided the song wasn't right for the album.

Then producer Jimmy Iovine heard an opportunity.

At the same time, Iovine was working with Patti Smith in another studio nearby. He brought her a cassette of Springsteen's unfinished recording.

Smith wasn't immediately interested.

She wanted to write her own songs. But one night, while waiting for her boyfriend Fred "Sonic" Smith to call from Detroit, she finally put the tape on.
