Afeni Shakur had been a Black Panther, and had defended herself in court while pregnant with him, against more than a hundred charges, and won. She had also spent years addicted to crack cocaine, and the household he grew up in had been poor, unstable and frequently without a home.
The remarkable thing about the song is that it does not clean any of that up.
He says plainly that she was a crack addict. He says the family went hungry. He describes stealing and dealing as a teenager and admits he was a difficult child who did not make her life easier. There is no soft focus and no revision.
