They Almost Hid This Song on the B-Side — Then DJs Turned It Into an Anthem of Survival

THE SONG THEY ALMOST BURIED

In 1978, Gloria Gaynor walked into a recording session carrying more than just a microphone.

She was recovering from spinal surgery and still processing the loss of her mother.

Then she was handed a song that had been sitting unfinished for nearly two years.

The lyrics immediately struck her.

She could feel the message because she was living through her own difficult chapter. Gaynor later recalled reading the words and realizing that people facing almost any painful situation could find themselves in them.

But the record company didn't see it the same way.

The song was intended to be the B-side of another single.

And the recording itself was rushed.

The musicians had only about 35 minutes to create the backing track. They weren't even expecting it to become the important side of the record.

Gaynor recorded her vocals while wearing a back brace.

Yet somehow, the limitations made the performance feel even more personal.
