The band had released Street Survivors on October 17, only three days before the accident. "Free Bird" was already an established part of their repertoire, having appeared on their 1973 debut. The Greenville show therefore belonged to a band presenting new work while drawing on a trusted closer. It was not a planned farewell concert, and the song was not written to predict what would happen.
On October 20, the crash killed six people, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines. Other people aboard survived, many with serious injuries. Those facts are enough to explain why the previous night's music acquired such weight. History later made one of those closings final for three performers who should have had more stages ahead of them. Remembering Greenville does not require changing the song's origins. It requires hearing a familiar ending with the knowledge that, sometimes, ordinary plans are interrupted before anyone can say goodbye.
