Before success gave Gordon Lightfoot a life of constant travel, airports represented distance and possibility. He spent time near Toronto's runways watching aircraft rise into the sky. From that image came Early Morning Rain, a song about a stranded man with little money, a suitcase and no place to go.
The details are plain: wet weather, a departing jet and the painful knowledge that the machine can cross more distance in hours than the narrator can manage at all. Modern aviation becomes the opposite of freedom because he is left on the ground.
An old folk ache in a modern setting
Traditional songs often placed lonely travelers beside trains or ships. Lightfoot moved that loneliness to the jet age without losing the folk-song simplicity. The aircraft is described almost like a living creature, roaring above a man whose world has narrowed to rain and regret.
His melody is direct enough to feel inherited rather than composed. That quality allowed other singers to enter it easily. Peter, Paul and Mary recorded the song, and versions followed from Ian and Sylvia, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and many others.
The song traveled farther than its narrator
Lightfoot released his own version in the mid-1960s, when he was emerging from Toronto's folk scene as a songwriter of unusual precision. The record helped establish the themes that would define him: weather, travel, separation and the dignity of people who cannot simply fix their circumstances.
The irony is beautiful. The man in Early Morning Rain cannot get home, but the song itself traveled everywhere. These are people with occupations, habits, and aspirations, observed by someone whose own future was far from settled.
The songwriter's presence changes the balance. He is not simply an outsider describing other people's disappointments. He is earning money in the same room, accepting its requests and participating in its nightly rhythm. Knowing that background makes the recording feel less like a judgment passed on the customers and more like a portrait made from inside their temporary community.
The song introduces individuals, but the chorus gathers them together. That is the emotional turn listeners can feel without knowing anyone's name. There is an important limit to the true-story label. Recognizable people supplied the foundation, but songwriting still involves selection, structure, and perspective. According to its songwriter, that was enough to get it rejected. Yet the qualities that seemed wrong for the film became the reason its ending could leave such a different kind of ache.
Bette Midler's recording of "The Rose" emerged from the 1979 film of the same name. Amanda McBroom wrote the song; Midler gave it the interpretation that brought it to a wide audience. Their contributions should not be confused. The emotional connection between a singer and a composition can feel deeply personal without making the singer its author or the lyric a literal account of her life.
On her official website, McBroom recalls hearing another song on the radio and questioning its painful view of love. Her response became a composition built around a different possibility: vulnerability does not have to make hope foolish. She describes finishing it quickly at the piano. Later, her friend and collaborator Michele Brourman submitted it for the film, opening a door McBroom had not initially expected the song to reach.
The first response was discouraging. In McBroom's account, the producers considered it unsuitable for a rock movie. Music supervisor Paul Rothchild championed it and sent it to Midler, who liked it. This is the songwriter's retrospective telling, not a scene whose private dialogue needs embellishment. Its central contrast is strong enough: the song survived because someone heard value in the very difference that had counted against it.
The film, directed by Mark Rydell, follows fictional singer Mary Rose Foster through the pressures of fame, relationships, and life on the road. Midler's performance moves through exhaustion and volatility as well as stage command. The title ballad offers another emotional language. Rather than trying to outshout the turmoil, it makes space after it. Its restraint does not solve the character's suffering; it changes how the audience sits with it.
Listen to the way the recording begins. Midler gives the melody room instead of announcing the largest emotion immediately. The final song did not arrive with an announcement that an era was ending. It was a familiar concert closer, part of the band's working life on the road. Only afterward would the date make the music seem unbearably different. On October 19, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd played Greenville Memorial Auditorium in South Carolina. The following day, a plane crash brought that chapter of the band to a devastating stop.
"Free Bird" is identified as the closing number in Greenville's GVLtoday retrospective and reconstructions of the show's set list. That makes it the last song performed at the final concert featuring Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines. It does not make it their last composition or final studio recording. The distinction matters, especially when a powerful story can tempt people to turn several different endings into one.
The band had released Street Survivors on October 17, only three days before the accident. "Free Bird" was already an established part of their repertoire, having appeared on their 1973 debut. The Greenville show therefore belonged to a band presenting new work while drawing on a trusted closer. It was not a planned farewell concert, and the song was not written to predict what would happen.
On October 20, the crash killed six people, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines. Other people aboard survived, many with serious injuries. Those facts are enough to explain why the previous night's music acquired such weight. The tragedy does not need invented final conversations, imagined premonitions, or graphic detail to make the loss real.
The song's own beginnings were about a different kind of departure. In an oral history published by Garden & Gun, Gary Rossington recalled the early composition as a love song shaped by life on the road. Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins are its credited writers. The music later gathered meanings that exceeded those origins, but hearing grief in it after 1977 is not the same as saying grief caused it to be written.
Listen to the contrast between the reflective opening and the extended instrumental release. The early passages make leaving feel personal, while the guitars eventually carry the performance beyond what the singer can explain in words. Heard after the accident, that movement can feel like loss turning into a refusal to fall silent. The band's history also did not end permanently in 1977. Surviving members returned for a reunion tour in 1987 with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny Van Zant. The song became a difficult part of continuing, not simply a relic. Recordings require care, too. Widely circulated pre-crash concert footage is often from other dates, including Oakland in July 1977. An earlier performance can show the band in motion without being presented as the final show. Knowing the difference protects the people and the history from a misleading claim that a powerful clip must document the most tragic moment connected with it.
Return to "Free Bird" without asking it to be a prophecy. The musicians made a song that could close a concert with extraordinary force. History later made one of those closings final for three performers who should have had more stages ahead of them. Remembering Greenville does not require changing the song's origins. It requires hearing a familiar ending with the knowledge that, sometimes, ordinary plans are interrupted before anyone can say goodbye.
