She Arrived Pregnant After Midnight. Her Voice Gave the Song Its Breaking Point

Merry Clayton was asleep at home in Los Angeles when a late-night call asked her to sing for a British rock band. She was pregnant, the hour was unreasonable, and she did not know the song. Still, encouraged by her husband, saxophonist Curtis Amy, she got dressed and went to the studio.

What happened there gave the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" its most emotionally explosive moment. Clayton's voice did more than complete the track. It made the danger at the heart of the song feel immediate, physical, and frighteningly close.
