The Riff Came From a Bedside Tape. The Fuzz Was Supposed to Be Temporary

Keith Richards did not sit down with a guitar and carefully construct the riff that changed the Rolling Stones' career. According to his later recollections, he woke during the night, played the figure into a Philips tape recorder beside his bed, and fell asleep again. When he checked the tape, it held a brief burst of guitar followed by a much longer stretch of sleeping-room noise.
