The band had released Street Survivors on October 17, only three days before the accident. "Free Bird" was already an established part of their repertoire, having appeared on their 1973 debut. The Greenville show therefore belonged to a band presenting new work while drawing on a trusted closer. On October 20, the crash killed six people, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines.
